Whether you are in a tiny fender-bender or a major accident, you should always call the police. An officer may not come to the scene of a minor accident in some areas, but we strongly recommend that you contact them no matter what.
While you are waiting for the police to arrive, it is best if you leave everything at the accident scene exactly as it is. This will not only provide evidence of what occurred, but will also prevent you from causing a secondary or even chain-reaction accident. If you have a camera with you, take pictures.
If there are passersby or other witnesses to the accident, get them to give you a signed statement or testimony. This can be tremendously helpful if the other party seeks legal action against you. Get their names and contact information as well so you can request that they serve as witnesses later on.
Make sure to get the following information from every person that was involved in the accident: name, driver’s license number, address, contact information, insurance company, insurance policy number, insurance expiration date, license plate number, title holder (if the name on the registration is different from the person driving, make sure that they are actually covered by the insurance policy).
Even what seems like minor injuries can become very serious as time goes on. Get to a doctor and get checked out as soon as possible.
